These awards are our commitment for the future, so that we can continue making effort for active and high-quality cooperation both within the company – with our employees – and with the community.
Premogovnik Velenje considers social responsibility as a serious commitment for economic success, the quality of live and work of our employees, cooperation with the local community and care for a wider social environment. Measures in all aspects of social responsibility are part of the strategic goals of the company. We provide our employees with suitable working conditions and protection equipment, we guarantee the development of technology, and ensure protection of health of our employees with preventive health check-ups and rest. We promote a healthy lifestyle through our Sports organisation and publications.
Being aware of our responsibility to the employees and the local community, we put great emphasis on managing the environment in everything we do. Having transformed the Šaleška valley, where we operate, a great deal throughout the years, we want at least partly to restore its former appearance by contributing new interesting and attractive content. The post-war development of Velenje is largely based on coal: the development of the town, infrastructure, education, arts, and sports.
Nowadays, mining landscape is not what a visitor sees when coming to the Šaleška valley; the valley is becoming an attractive and interesting place for tourists and sports enthusiasts. We are recovering the degraded land that has been transformed in the coal mining process, we have built nearly 20 kilometres of cycling and walking routes around the Šaleška lakes, installed 100 new benches, built a sports track and a cross-country skiing trail, we have helped build a new children’s playground in Šoštanj, sports courts, etc. Hardly any activity goes by in the Šaleška valley which Premogovnik does not at least indirectly take part in.
The company is a renowned employer. We provide grants in order to acquire new employees. We provide practical training for our grant holders and other students. To students from the Šaleška valley grants are provided under the motto “Energy to knowledge – knowledge to energy”. By opening our care home for adults Zimzelen in Topolšica, we opened up 70 new jobs in the time of an economic crisis.
Our subsidiary participated in a project to renovate a hotel in Golte, where we, again, provided new jobs in the Savinjska-Šaleška region by building a modern skiing resort and wellness centre.
Special emphasis is put on landscaping, both above ground on the production plant courtyards and inside the coal mine, which comprises 50 km of underground workings – these have to be maintained on a regular basis and subject to safety control. To this aim we organise waste sorting 400 m under ground.
